CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! is the Official Canadian Street Hockey Tournament. These large-scale, 4on4 events are held in downtown, on-street locations and feature recreational and competitive street hockey tournament divisions for both genders, all skill levels, and all ages.

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! events also celebrate the game of hockey in its most basic form… in a wholesome, festival atmosphere that makes kids feel like NHL pros and helps adults feel like kids again.

Since this program’s inception, over sixteen thousand Canadians have “taken back the streets” from coast to coast through participation in one of the twenty-one Play On! events held to date.

As many as 10 teams made serious bids to sign Sundin but the big Swede decided on the Canucks, who at the end of last season attempted to lure the 37-year-old free agent center to the west coast with a two-year $20 million deal.

“I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks,” Sundin said in a statement on the Canucks’ website

(http://canucks.nhl.com). “Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit.”

Sundin, who ranked 22nd all-time in career goals (555) at the end of last season, had kept teams dangling while deciding whether to retire or return for an 18th season.

Details of the deal were not immediately available but it is believed Sundin’s decision ultimately hinged on joining a team that would provide him with a chance of winning a first Stanley Cup.

The Canucks, tied with the Calgary Flames atop the Northwest division standings, were one of the most vigorous suitors in the belief Sundin could launch them on a serious Cup run.

FIRST PICK

Taken by the Quebec Nordiques with the first overall pick in the 1989 NHL draft, Sundin has been one of the NHL most dependable scorers, collecting 1,321 points in 1,305 games.

In 13 seasons in Toronto, Sundin rewrote the Maple Leafs’ record books by scoring 420 goals and a franchise high 987 points.

A bruising physical presence, the six-foot five-inch, 231-pound forward led Toronto in scoring last season with 32 goals and 78 points in 74 games.

Sundin’s glittering resume includes an Olympic gold medal from the 2006 Turin Winter Games and he helped Sweden to world championship crowns in 1991, 1992 and 1998.

That combination of leadership qualities and skills made the nine-times all-star one of the NHL’s prize free agents.

“We are very excited to have Mats join the Vancouver Canucks,” general manager Mike Gillis said.

“Playing previously in two Canadian markets and consistently being among team and league leaders in scoring, Mats has proven that he can excel under pressure.

“He adds a wealth of experience, leadership and skill to the Canucks.”

The Metropolis Mystery Manor returns to Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby for 14 days of scary fun from Saturday, Oct. 18 to Oct. 31. Kids are invited to the mall Oct. 25 for fun with the Metrokids Club or for trick-or-treating at 6 p.m. on Halloween Eve. The Metropolis Mystery Manor, a haunted house where kids and grown ups are dared to be scared, is located in the mall’s Grand Court with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Rotary Club of Burnaby-Deer Lake. This fun fright is recommended for children age seven and up. Head out to the country to the Willowview Farms, 288 McCallum Rd., in Abbotsford, to pick out the perfect pumpkin. Saturdays in October are Pumpkin Daze, featuring a hay maze, petting zoo, and a hayride to the pumpkin patch. In October, the farm is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. FYI: they also sell a tasty apple cider.

Apple Barn

Apple Barn, 333 Gladwin Rd. in Abbotsford is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Apple Barn has a play pass for kids for $6.50, which includes hayrides, hay maze, bin maze, slides and petting zoo. Adults are $3, which can be refunded for $3 worth of apples. Pony rides are available on weekends for $4.50, and hayrides are available sometimes on weekdays.

Aldor Acres

Venture out to Langley to check out Aldor Acres, 24990 84th Ave., Langley. Cost is $6 per person or $27 per family, includes hayride, petting farm with many baby animals including a baby horse, a colt named Blaze, and Lavender, the pig, had babies on Oct. 1. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, until Oct. 31.

Country Farms

Richmond is home to a great pumpkin patch at Country Farms, 12900 Steveston Hwy. Sing along hayrides, petting zoo, live entertainment, corn maze and much more. Hours are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday (and holidays) 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free admission for children under two. Weekday admission is $7 and on weekends admission is $10, which includes a kid-size pumpkin.

Peteys Pumpkin Patch

In Chilliwack, check out Peteys Pumpkin Patch and the Kids Zone. Take a train out to the pumpkin patch, little goblins can play in a Dora pirate ship, and much more. For a scarier trek, check out Reapers and the Dark Maze.
