A new 30-site campground is in the works for Elfin Lakes in Garibaldi Provincial Park. There will also be upgrades to road access, ranger stations, and toilet facilities.

The project has a budget of $600,000 and is part of the recently announced $3 million boost being given to BC Parks.

From Pique News Magazine:

A new 30-site backcountry campground is being built at Elfin Lakes as part of a $600,000 infrastructure investment in Garibaldi Provincial Park by BC Parks.

Along with the campground, the money will go into building toilet facilities, a picnic shelter, improve the access road and an upgrade of ranger stations.

This is part of a $13.98 million capital budget announced by BC Parks for 2012-2013, for 120 projects in 89 parks. The investment in Garibaldi Provincial Park is part of $2.38 million being spent in the South Coast Region, which includes the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast.

Overall, the capital budget fund for BC Parks has increased by 27 per cent over last year, or by $3 million, BC Parks said in a release.

A major priority for capital projects, the release continued, was “directed at attracting young families, offering new recreation opportunities, improving accessibility and increasing attendance.”

Almost 20 million people visit British Columbia’s provincial parks every year.

“We want to encourage even more people to get out and enjoy B.C.’s spectacular parks,” said environment minister Terry Lake.

“These improvements will keep the regular visitors coming back and encourage other, more diverse groups to visit in the future.”

BCLions.com StaffThe BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that import linebackers Beau Bell[...]

BCLions.com Staff

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that import linebackers Beau Bell, Rodney Paulk, and Glenn Love have been signed by the team.

Bell, the most experienced of the three new Leos, was selected by Cleveland in the 2008 NFL Draft (4th round, 104th overall) and played the 2008 season with the Browns before being waived in September 2009. Beau spent two seasons in the UFL with Las Vegas (2010) and Omaha (2011) before signing with the Spokane Shock for the 2012 AFL season.

Paulk spent six years at the University of South Carolina due to injuries in 2008 and 2009 which extended his eligibility. He bounced back with strong seasons in 2010 and 2011, playing in 26 games through his final two seasons and 43 for his career. He racked up a total of 159 tackles and added four sacks.

Love played in 48 games from 2008 through 2011 for UCLA, switching from safety to linebacker for his final two seasons with the Bruins. Playing on both defense and special teams, he totaled 55 tackles and two sacks. Love was signed following an impressive performance at the Lions’ free agent camp in Seattle last week.

Katie Lawrence
BCLions.com

Following the announcement of his contract extension on Tuesday afternoon, BCLions.com caught up with Leos receiver Akeem Foster to learn more about how the third-year Lion has been spending his off-season.

What are your thoughts on winning the Grey Cup in 2011?

AF: The only thought that comes to mind is that it’s a dream come true, because as a kid you grow up and wanted to play in the CFL, but then getting to the Grey Cup and playing in front of the fans and your family, it’s the experience of a lifetime.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned in your time with the Lions?

AF: The biggest thing I’ve learned is probably preparation. Getting ready week-to-week to take on an opponent and battle, and playing to the best of your ability, reaching your top potential.

Speaking of preparation, are you ready for training camp?

AF: The real question is, “is training camp ready for me?”

I’ve been waiting for training camp since November. Now it’s just around the corner, and I’m excited to get in there and cause a few problems here and there with the teammates, stir up some beef. It’s going to be fun to be around the fellas again and to get focused back on the task at hand.

What is your personal goal for 2012?

AF: My personal goal for 2012 is to do everything that I did last year, but better. A lot better.

Since you spend a lot of time on the West Coast now, what is your favourite thing about Vancouver?

AF: My favourite thing about Vancouver has to just be hanging out with the fellas. You miss your family, being from Ajax (Ontario), but chilling with the guys helps. Also, the community is great as well. Being able to go read a couple books to the kids and stuff like that, it’s a blast.

BCLions.com Staff

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that offensive lineman Dean Valli has signed a contract extension.

“Dean has quietly developed into a very strong force on the offensive line,” said Lions VP, football operations and GM Wally Buono. “This extension is part of our goal to maintain continuity on the line of scrimmage which is of tremendous importance to our team’s success.”

Originally drafted by the Leos in 2006 (1st round, 6th overall), Valli enters his seventh CFL season after a standout career at Simon Fraser University. The hulking offensive guard and North Vancouver native has played in 95 regular season games in addition to seven post-season appearances including four West Division Finals, one Eastern Final, one West Semi-Final and last year’s Grey Cup win.

“As a six-year veteran and a member of two Grey Cup-winning teams, Dean knows what it takes to win and I look forward to having him as a cornerstone of our offensive line,” said head coach Mike Benevides.
