Luc Bourdon Tribute

The Vancouver Canucks’ 2008-09 NHL season got off to a chilling start last night with a touching tribute to late defenceman Luc Bourdon, who died this May when he lost control of his motorcycle on a New Brunswick highway near his hometown of Shippigan.

Last night, the Canucks remembered Bourdon by presenting his last game-worn sweater to four family members, including his mother and fiancĂ©e. The players will also wear stickers with “L.B.” on their helmets for the remainder of the season.

The jersey was presented by Canucks captain Roberto Luongo, ex-teammate and close friend Alex Burrows and by the season-ticket holder who was given Bourdon’s sweater after the final home game last year.

The ceremony, peppered with chants of “Luc” from the 18,630 at GM Place, ended with recording artist Tom Cochrane performing an acoustic version of his song Big League while photos of Bourdon appeared on the video scoreboard.

The Bourdon and Cherepanov accidents are tragic, for their families and the NHL. The question is whether these accidents can be prevented in the future. Maybe better testing on the NHL’s part for the Cherepanov situation and educating the players (youngsters) on dangerous activities such as motorcycle etc… Just seems like more should/can be done to prevent tragedies like these from occuring in the future…. My thoughts. http://jib-sports-culture.blogspot.com/2008/11/tragedy-for-promising-rookies.html
