Fourth annual event explores history of B.C. through music, comedy and more from May 29-31Surrey Childrens Festival

The focus is on B.C.’s history during the fourth annual Surrey Children’s Festival, which offers an all-Canadian lineup of performers at Bear Creek Park this week.

As always, the three-day fest features a good number of free and ticketed shows in the park and the adjacent Surrey Arts Centre, starting Thursday, May 29.

This year’s event will key on the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia — a “journey beyond imagination,” as the festival’s tag line suggests this time around.

The annual Surrey Children’s Festival inspires young hearts and minds to greater possibilities and celebrates our rich and diverse cultural heritage through performing and visual arts experiences.

It’s world-class performing artists brought right to your doorstep! Musical performances by Charlotte Diamond and the Hug Bug Band, Norman Foote, Rick Scott and Pied Pumkin and the Old Coyotes are among the ticketed shows, with more theatrical and acrobatic acts from the likes of Ontario’s Cake and I Scream and the Quebec-based Dynamo Theatre.

Surrey Children’s Festival began life as a one-off in 2000 and re-emerged as an annual event five years later.

The fourth annual Surrey Children’s Festival runs May 29-31 (Thursday through Saturday) at Bear Creek Park and Surrey Arts Centre.

Admission is free, with show tickets priced at $6 for kids under 3, $10.50 regular admission or $36 for a family of four.

Ticketed venues include three inside the Surrey Arts Centre (Main Stage, Studio Stage and Lily Pad Stage) and one (the 260-seat Leap Frog Stage) under a tent in the park.

Saturday’s Family Fun Day includes a festival procession (parade) starting at noon.
