The annual PuSh International Performing Arts Festival is one of Vancouver’s signature events. Produced over 20 days each January, the PuSh Festival presents groundbreaking work in the live performing arts: theatre, dance, music and various hybrid forms of performance. It attracts acclaimed local, national and international artists and their work.

PuSh expands the horizons of Vancouver artists and audiences with work that is visionary, genre-bending, multi-disciplined, startling and original. Over 23,000 people attended the 2008 festival. Visiting presenters from across Canada and around the world were in attendance for the Assembly networking event to view performances, dialogue and do business.

PuSh is much more than an annual cultural feast for Vancouver: it is a broker of international partnerships, a meeting place for creative minds, a showcase of Canada’s best and an incubator of brilliant new work.

PuSh puts Vancouver on the world stage and brings the world to Vancouver.

PuSh’s short history is one of rapid growth and success.

The festival has learnt how to make the most of limited resources, driven by a grass-roots appreciation of how exceptional artists can change lives and change societies.

Since its modest beginnings in 2003, PuSh has grown exponentially as it has been welcomed as a breath of fresh air for Western Canada. Initially a series of presentations produced by two independent theatre companies, PuSh is now an established organization with far-reaching connections around the world and a place at the heart of Canadian innovation.

Each new PuSh Festival has received an ecstatic reception. Audiences have grown dramatically alongside international interest, and media response has been prolific and complimentary. Government and private support has increased to meet some of the challenges, and the organization itself is constantly reassessing its growth and sustainability, its directions and operations.

In April of 2007, Melbourne-based festival director Andrew Bleby led a consultation process for the creation of a four-year business plan. The document serves as a comprehensive introduction to the festival: its nature, history, management and future. It also provides an overview of PuSh’s key strategic priorities leading to 2011.

Monday, October 27th, 8pm at the Broadway International Wine Shop – 2752 West Broadway.

An Italian inspired evening of creative food and wine pairings. We’ll be tasting a selection of Tuscan and Super Tuscan reds as well as a beautiful dessert wine to finish, all expertly paired by La Quercia. Special guests will be Chefs/owners Lucais Syme and Adam Pegg of Kitsilano’s newest Italian Trattoria, La Quercia and Winemaker/owner, Marco Bacci of Tuscany’s Castello di Bossi.

The Castello family estate is located in the small picturesque village of Bossi which is in the southernmost part of the Chianti Classico region. Their vineyards are dedicated to growing Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Cab and Merlot varietals were planted as far back as 40 years ago, making them among the oldest plantings in all of Tuscany. Marco Bacci will take us on a tour of Tuscany, share with us his vineyard stories and history of the region. This will be Marco’s first time visiting Canada and his only public event in Vancouver.

La Quercia is one of Vancouver’s newest and most authentic regional Italian restaurants. Chefs Lucais Syme and Adam Pegg, formerly of La Buca and Parkside, share a wealth of talent and experience. Their focus is on Slow Food and regional Italian cuisine. Their pastas are made by hand, ingredients are sourced locally and are organic where possible. Their approach is to mix traditional and contemporary plates, prepared with precise technique. For this event, Lucais and Adam have created specific pairings that will explore the tradition and romance of Italian food and wine.

With four indoor and outdoor entertainment stages and all Canadian bands (including one of our favorites 54-40), all day long, it’s bound to be an entertaining day.

Fireworks start at 10:30pm and is a perfect way to end daytime Canada Day celebrations at Canada Place, in West Vancouver and North Vancouver and throughout the surrounding communities.

Coldplay, Jay-Z, Tom Petty and the Tragically Hip…all at one festival. Don’t miss the Pemberton Festival, Friday, July 25th to Sunday, July 27th.

There are two stages and a dance tent with more than 66 acts in all over the three day festival. Three-day festival tickets are $259.50. Pemberton, a two-hour drive from Vancouver, has long been a favorite winter vacation destination due to its close proximity to Whistler Resort. Complete with a festival village, camping facilities, an RV Park, tickets for the Pemberton Festival are still available through PembertonFestival.com.

With artists performing with majestic snow capped mountains as their backdrop, every effort is being made to produce the festival with as little impact on the environment as possible. Hydro-electric energy will be the main power source for the festival’s energy, and the festival will promote car pooling with the incentive that cars coming in with four or more people will be able to park for free. And local Pemberton Valley farm products, which the area is well known for, will be served throughout the 360 acre festival site. A farmer’s market – where local farmers can sell their goods directly to concert-goers - is even being planned for the site.

Concert-goers will be able to camp on site or sleep in accommodations ranging from motels to top notch luxury hotels in Whistler.

The City of Victoria has an exciting maritime history. Victoria’s Inner Harbour, on Thursday, June 26, is the venue for the spectacular Parade of Sail, which kicks off the Victoria Tall Ships Festival. There will be at least 24 Tall Ships with their sails billowing and according to estimates from the festival director they are aiming to attract 40,000 paid visitors.

Ships that have been used in movies, the ‘ Bounty’ (a 54-metre sailing vessel), the ‘Nina’ (a replica of the 15th century ship of Christopher Columbus) and ‘Lady Washington’ (112 ft. replica of the privateer sailed during the American Revolution, and used in the Pirates of the Caribbean) are three of the Tall Ships seen on the big screen. The ships will be open for boarding at various times on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors will be able to walk the decks, look up through the rigging and get a sense of what it must have been like to sail aboard these magnificent ships. As well, there will be interactive educational activities, live music, craft fairs, a kids zone and festive events.
